The Importance of Relaxation – Why we need to relax.

Chronic stress can have detrimental effects on the mind and body – but that’s the importance of relaxation – releasing stress and diminishing those effects.

The Importance of Relaxation

Day to day, we go through stress.

Stress, or expectation of stress, activates our Sympathetic Nervous System. This is the part that is responsible for the fight or flight response. (Which now includes freeze or fawn.)

Some stress is okay. But prolonged stress, chronic stress, re-activation again and again, can have detrimental effects on the body. But relaxation helps turn the Sympathetic Nervous System off.

And one way to relax is through meditation. Like a Sound Immersion.

Here’s how it breaks down:

The Mind –

Mediation has shown to relieve stress. There are so many studies out there! It helps to reduce stress, anxiety, depression, and fatigue. All while increasing the sense of control we have over our lives, improving memory and attention span, and increasing our performance at work or at school. We just over all feel better!

The Body –

And this stress, negatively affects our bodies! According to the American Psychological Association, the continued activation of the sympathetic nervous system, the one responsible for that fight or flight response, wears on the body. That means muscle tension leading to body aches and headaches, harder breathing triggering asthma attacks and panic attacks, increased risk of hypertension, heart attack, and stroke, more acid reflux and heartburn, even potential ulcers and other digestion issues.

Who wants any of that??

By meditating, and thus relaxing, we deactivate that fight or flight response, and release stress! Our minds and bodies thank us for it!
