What is Reiki: A Brief Introduction
Reiki is an energy healing technique where the practitioner ‘lays their hands’ on the client and allows for the Reiki energy to flow through them. The Reiki energy reduces stress and relaxes the client, which can promote healing within the body and mind. A Reiki Master attunes their students for each of the three degrees- Shoden, Okuden, and Shinpiden. They may even attune their students multiple times for each degree. But the key for Reiki being passed down, is through these attunements.
A Brief History
Reiki was discovered, or bestowed upon, Mikao Usui Sensei. He is said to have climbed Mt. Kurama, and on the twenty-first day of fasting and meditating, Reiki came to him. He first healing he performed was on his own toe, which he stubbed on his way back down the mountain. Usui Sensei opened facilities where he could practice and teach others. He trained students, one of them being Chujiro Hayashi, who trained the first U.S. Reiki Master. Hawayo Takata went to Japan, seeking healing for her life-threatening illness. She brought Reiki from Japan to the U.S., specifically to Hawaii.
